The Nøkken

Disclaimer: This post is more or less a placeholder until I'm actually able to start this blog. This post was an assignment for a class, that I found interesting enough to post here. Enjoy~
The Nøkken is typically depicted as a beautiful young man or an androgynous individual. They have long black hair and play a violin or fiddle by the lake or river.
The Nøkken is always found around bodies of freshwater. Most stories suggest lakes, but there are some that place them at rivers, too.
With a violin or fiddle, the Nøkken is able to lure in unsuspecting victims with their beautiful tunes to their death in the water in which they reside. Though it’s unclear why the Nøkken lures its victims, it’s clear that it drowns them.
Lurking by the water, a fiddle in hand, is the Nøkken. While sometimes referred to as the Näken, in Scandinavia, they’re a type of Nixie, a water-pixie. But this creature isn’t little, and often doesn’t have wings. It sits by its waters to lure one in deep after captivating its victim with its melodies. Any poor souls drawn too close to its waters are dragged deep down under, never to be seen again. There’s no way to slay it, completely; only some stories say you can make a deal with it. But should you ask for musical knowledge, it’ll cost your soul or sanity. So if one hears a haunting melody echo out from fresh water, it’s best to avoid it, should one meet the Nøkken instead.
Like most myths that surround the water, the Nøkken is a reminder to remain wary around water. Like the Nøkken’s violin, water can be beautiful and enchanting. Sociologically, this creature is a warning to all, young and old. The creature acts as a reminder that water is to be respected, because though it can be beautiful, it can be deadly as well.
The only modern-day pieces I know that directly use Nøkken’s/Näcken’s are in Bramble: The Mountain King. A game that specifically focuses on an array of Scandinavian creatures from local folklore. Frida Johansson also did an album that features songs with Scandinavian influence. Track five, entitled Näcken, features a violin solo to mimic the luring melody the creature might play to lure one to the water.
